AOI Classification and Structural Principle in Assembly
Posted: May 14, 2022 By: Bonnie

With the wide application of 0201 chip components and 0.3Pinch integrated circuits, enterprises are increasingly demanding product quality, and inspection by human eyes has not ensured the quality of products. At this time, AOI technology came into being. As a newcomer in the SMT family, the emergence of AOI effectively solved the rare problem of surface patch quality inspection.

AOI Classification and Structural Principle in Assembly

AOI has many similarities to the presses and placement machines mentioned before, except that it is not a production device like a press and a placement machine. Although it is not a production equipment, it has an inseparable relationship with production.

1. Classification of AOI
The full name of AOI is Automatic Optic Inspection, which is an equipment based on optical principles to detect common defects encountered in welding production. AOI is not used in the production line, and can be divided into online and offline AOI. Although there is a division of labor, they all work the same way.

1). Online: It is an optical detector that can be placed on the assembly line together with other equipment on the SMT line. The rhythm is the same as the production cycle of other equipment on the production line, and can be placed in different positions on the production line depending on the purpose of the inspection. The online AOI adopts 100% detection mode for full inspection, with high degree of automation, and all tests are automatically completed with the pipeline. ESD has a low degree of concern because it is an automatic operation, and the detection process basically does not need to consider this problem. The labor intensity of the online AOI is also very low, and no manual assistance is required except for device programming. And there is no pollution.

2). Offline AOI: It is an optical detector that can not be used together with the SMT pipeline on the assembly line, but can be placed in other locations to detect the PCB on the SMT pipeline. The off-line inspection method is random inspection or batch sampling. It is moderately automated and requires manual assistance to complete the inspection. Workers need assistance in the inspection process, and sensitive components need to be handled with extra care. In the offline AOI use process, each board inspection needs to be manually placed, and it needs to be manually taken out after the inspection. Compared to the online AOI, offline AOI can cause light pollution, and the close contact of the inspector will be stimulated by the high-intensity light source for a long time.

2. Structure of AOI
Whether it is online AOI or offline AOI, their structural principles are the same, usually consisting of image acquisition, motion control systems, image processing systems and data processing systems. The AOI structure is relatively simple compared to other SMT devices.
