The definition of an impedance



Impedance is any obstruction, or the measure of the opposition of an electric current to the energy flow when voltage is applied. An example of impedance is a line of resistance within an electrical current.

What is common mode impedance?



Odd mode impedance is defined as impedance of a single transmission line when the two lines in a pair are driven differentially (with signals of the same amplitude and opposite polarity). Common mode impedance is defined as impedance between the two lines when the line pair is driven with common mode stimulus.

What is the formula for impedance?



Impedance is measured in ohms and may include resistance (R), inductive reactance (XL), and capacitive reactance (XC).
To calculate impedance, calculate the resistance and reactance of the circuit, then label resistance as R and reactance as X. Square both R and X, and add the two products together. Take the square root of the sum of the squares of R and X to get impedance. Display the answer in ohms.

How to calculate voltage impedance?



This applied voltage divided by the rated primary voltage (times 100) is the impedance of the transformer. Example: For a 480 Volt rated primary, if 9.6 volts causes secondary full load current to flow through the shorted secondary, the transformer impedance is 9.6/480 = .02 = 2%Z.
